The story is set in the aftermath of a brutal civil war in the kingdom of Paladia, a world where magic is governed by resonance, and practitioners wield powers like alchemy (manipulating metals and matter) and necromancy (controlling the dead). The protagonist is Helena Marino, a former alchemist and Resistance healer. The Resistance has been crushed by the new ruling class of corrupt guild families and powerful necromancers, whose victory was secured with the aid of vile undead creatures. Helena is now a prisoner, her abilities suppressed, and her mind is fractured. She has inexplicable memory loss of the crucial months leading up to her capture, leading her enemies to suspect that her lost memories hide a vital secret about the Resistance's final strategy. To unearth these secrets, Helena is sent to the crumbling estate of The High Reeve, Kaine Ferron, one of the most powerful and ruthless necromancers of the new regime, and her former academic rival. Trapped and facing constant interrogation and psychological torment, Helena's fight begins: a desperate struggle to protect her lost history and the last remaining shreds of her former self in a dark, war-torn world where morality is ambiguous and survival requires terrible compromises. The novel explores themes of trauma, redemption, the moral cost of war, and a complex, intense relationship between captor and prisoner.
